All the products are environmentally friendly and do not cause deforestation, but in fact help reduce it. They manufacture unique products at a high standard of quality. All the products are made by skilled artisans. The sources are carefully selected to be 100% free of child labor.
The philosophy One mainly concentrates on the promotion of Nepalese handmade products to encourage and develop the skills and lifestyle of people from the hilly and mountainous regions where the raw materials originate from. They employ as many workers as possible from a range of social and economic levels, while offering benefits such as health-care and education to their children. The Natural Fiber is doing business to promote the mountain villagers where they find the necessary raw materials. The development of a new agro-oriented industry in Nepal should give priority to the geographic areas most subject to economic sensibility - this is without a doubt the very remote and isolated valleys of the Himalayas. These remote areas still have the traditions which can easily be applied to annual fibers to produce labor intensive luxury handicraft, which can be brought to the market and sell at a maximum of remote labor. Natural fibers industry can quickly spread too many villages with a minimum of technical assistance. The Natural Fiber is working in an institutionalized way to promote and develop the natural fiber industry in Nepal. They have engaged to help the remote villages with the legal, financial, technical and marketing assistance necessary to get a high quality product to the world markets.
The Products The Natural Fiber offers varieties of quality Nepalese handicrafts including fashionable garments, bamboo, hemp, nettle, banana fabrics and all kind of natural fabrics, wool sweaters, bags and hats and pashmina stoles for export all over the world. As well as natural carpets and all kind of knitting wear. They encourage their customers to request and suggest custom designs. Ones imagination is the only limit.
Sustainability - Ecological info Our supplier partner is continuously working with the villagers and forest specialist in Nepal. He is meeting with the village development community's leaders, the forest development community's leaders for how to manage the jungle and how to control over harvesting of nettle, to define the ideal nettle harvesting time, the yearly possibilities to collect raw nettle. The most important topic: to control over harvesting and the ecological system. At the same time he is in discussions with the environment conscious natural fabrics buyers to define what can be their contribution for this project. From this project he wants to make sure villagers always get the work on nettle and to prove that the project is very sincere for the environment. All the users of these natural resources should take their responsibilities for the environment. Out of 75 districts of Nepal in 38 districts there are villagers collecting raw nettle from their community jungles. Now in each district the villagers have the permission to collect 5 tones of raw nettle each year. In the initial research it was found that if the villagers collect nettle as per market demand ratio, the raw material will only last for five year. If we do not start to educate the villagers to manage the jungles in 10 year there will be a shortage of raw nettle. Raw materials Most of the raw materials such as hemp, nettle, cotton, silk, natural pashmina come from the mountains, and they are made by hand locally. Local villagers collect wild hemp and nettles in quantities that do not adversely affect the bio-system, to keep the harvest eco-friendly. Production begins with soaking the plant fiber, which is then boiled with ash to bleach it and make it soft. After drying on rocks in the sun, the fiber is turned into thread by hand. These yarns can be woven into fabric or can be used to make natural knitting products. Hemp fabric is a bit harder than nettles and is more durable than cotton. Hemp products are long-lasting products. These natural fiber fabrics are healthy for the wearer, providing warmth in cold weather and helping one stay cool in during hot weather.
Wild Hemp and wild nettle collecting and yarn processing The workers are collecting wild hemp and wild nettle from very remote high Himalayan range. a 3 days walk from the village and 5-6 days of collecting and back to the village. They take the bark from plant and lay it in sunlight for 3 days to dry and then the fiber is processed bio-logically. The hemp and nettle fibers are then put in a big pond with water for 10 days. When they are ready they will be rinsed with clean water. The yarns are spun in the villages by hand. Now 80 thousand villagers from different part of Nepal are involve in hemp and nettle yarn processing work. They spun about 1 kilo of yarn in 10 days.
Wild nettle and wild hemp yarn Wild Nettle and wild hemp yarn is not coming regular color and regular yarn sizes because it is spun by hand and natural process. These days our supplier partner is using these hemp and nettle yarns to do also blends with cotton, soybean, bamboo, linen and other fiber materials. Nettle and hemp yarns are coming from the bark of hemp plant and nettle plant. This fiber is natural and organic fiber. Local villagers collect wild hemp and nettles in quantities that do not adversely affect the bio-system, to keep the harvest eco-friendly.
Please note that nettle yarns are not easy to be organized. For strategic reasons our supplier does not want to sell fibers. We will need a lot of patience because response time is slow as our contact is extensively traveling in the Nepalese mountains. Hand spun wild nettle yarns
