Polypropylene fiber is a product of polymerization of propylene and ethylene gases. The polymerization must be carried out under controlled conditions by special catalysts to produce qualities suitable for polypropylene fibers. Polyolefin fibers are characterized by their resistance to moisture and chemicals. It is a preferred fiber in general textile applications because of its ability to give bulk and cover, and the use of polypropylene fibers has progressed rapidly since its introduction. They resist dyeing, so colored olefin fibers are produced by adding dye directly to the polymer prior to or during melt spinning.

The properties of Polyolefin fibers can be tailored by additives, variations in the polymer, and by use of different process conditions.

General Polyolefin fiber characteristics:

  • Low static
  • Resistant to deterioration from chemicals, mildew, perspiration, rot and weather conditions 
  • Thermally bondable

  • Dry hand; it transports body moisture from the skin

  • Very lightweight (polypropylene and polyethylene fibers have the lowest specific gravity of all fibers) 

Applications: 

  • Hygiene: 
    Polyolefin fibers (PP) are the preferred fibers for disposable hygiene products such as baby diapers, feminine care products, medical textiles, because of polypropylene fibers' ability to offer luxurious softness, dry surface, liquid transportation, strength and elongation properties, and because Polyolefin fibers are considered the most environmentally friendly fiber the in the market.
  • Apparel: 
    Polyolefin fibers (especially PP) are widely used in active wear and sportswear; socks; thermal underwear; lining fabrics, because of excellent isolation and water and vapor transport properties.
  • Automotive: 
    Polyolefin fibers deliver the durability and colorfastness required in automotive interior fabrics used in or on kick panel, package shelf, seat construction, truck liners, load decks, etc.
  • Home furnishings: 
    Polyolefin fibers provide durability, luxurious look and softness for all types of indoor and outdoor carpets. The fibers are also used in carpet backing; upholstery and wall coverings; and furniture and bedding construction fabrics.
  • Industrial: 
    Polyolefin fibers meet the strict requirements to strength and durability in geotextiles markets. The fibers provide the foundation for high efficient filtration products. Polyolefin fibers reinforce textile, fabrics, and paper products for durable non-woven fabrics; filter fabrics; packaging materials, geotextiles and other industrial applications.
